Cruise ship MS Maasdam leaving Rotterdam 11.08.09 (1)
Named for the Maas River in the Netherlands, the ms Maasdam is the fifth ship in Holland America Line's 135-year history to bear the name. At 720-feet, the ms Maasdam is designed to carry fewer guests while providing more space for maximum comfort. Many staterooms feature commanding ocean views, and each suite has a private verandah. Featuring an interior motif that pays homage to the historical Dutch East and West India companies of the 17th through 19th centuries, the centerpiece of this elegant ship features Luciano Vistosi's "Totem," a monumental sculpture using nearly 2000 glimmering pieces of glass, prominently displayed in a soaring three-story atrium. Other intriguing art featured on the ms Maasdam are two abstract murals painted especially for the Rotterdam Dining Room and a collection of seven iron teapots and a charcoal brazier from Japan, which date from the end of Edo period. Cruise ship Queen Mary 2 going to Rotterdam 22.07.09 (5)
The RMS Queen Mary 2 is a Cunard Line ocean liner named after the earlier Cunard liner Queen Mary, which was in turn named after Mary of Teck, the Queen Consort of George V. It does not commemorate the reign of Queen Mary II. At the time of her construction in 2003 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, the Queen Mary 2 was the longest, widest and tallest passenger ship ever built, and at gross tonnage (GT) of 148528 tons, was also the largest. She lost the gross tonnage distinction to Royal Caribbean International's 154407 GT Freedom of the Seas in April 2006, but Queen Mary 2 remains the largest ocean liner (as opposed to cruise ship) ever built, and her width, length, and waterline breadth are unsurpassed by any other passenger ship.[4] Moreover, the Queen Mary 2 displaces approximately 76000 tons; the Royal Caribbean Freedom ships displace about 64000 tons. The Queen Mary 2 was the first major ocean liner built since the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1969. Queen Mary 2's facilities include 15 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, a ballroom, a theatre, and a planetarium. General characteristics: Tonnage: 151400 gross tons Displacement: 76000 tonnes (approx) Length: 1132 ft (345 m) Beam: 135 ft (41 m) waterline, 147.5 ft (45.0 m) extreme (bridge wings) Height: 236.2 ft (72.0 m) keel to funnel Draft: 33 ft (10.1 m) Decks: 13 passenger decks Installed power: 117 MW (157000 horsepower) CODAG Propulsion: Four 21.5 MW electric propulsion pods: 2 fixed and 2 azimuthing ...
